* MCPS (Short Story): As part of our manufacturing service, DMR Recordings will take care of all the MCPS requirements for your recording. Under our standing agreement with the MCPS we will gather the information, fill in the forms and pay all the fees required by them on your behalf. You can rest assured that all your legal obligations are taken care of.
* MCPS (Long Story): The Mechanical and Copyright Protection Society Ltd was incorporated in 1924 and has been owned by the Music Published Association since 1976. Its specialist staff and substantial computer operation provide royalty accounting services which benefit and protect owners of copyright music. MCPS represent the majority of music copyright owners in the UK and (by agreement with other societies) most of the world. It grants licenses for making recordings of its members’ musical works, and collects and distributes the royalties due. It deals with a variety of users of music such as record and video companies, audio visual companies and broadcasters etc. The moment a piece of music is written or recorded it is almost always ‘in copyright’. Amongst other things, this means that the writer (or the publisher if their has one) has the right to say who can make recordings of his/her work and under what terms. These rights are spelled out in the 1988 Copyright, Design and Patents Act. Anyone making even a single copy without copyright owner’s permission is breaking the law. Copyright in the UK continues for 70 years after the year of the writers death; after that the work goes to the ‘public domain’ and may be freely used. If you are recording a piece of music in any form, then you need to gain the permission of the copyright owner of the music and pay a fee in return for its use.
